I’m traveling to London for a week. Is it a good idea to rent a car if we have an economic budget?

  2. NO way man! Take the bus!! it’s much less expensive and parking in and around London is difficult to find AND costs more money.

Europe has much better public transportation, and you’ll find you can get anywhere by bus or light rail. please consider it.

If your planning on only spending time in London use the underground and buses rather than getting a car.
If you’re planning on going further afield maybe a car would be a good idea.

I don’t think so, the driving on the other side of the road, the roundabouts and the fact it was a stick gave me no end of nightmares the time I made the mistake of going this route. You can get anywhere on the Tube (subway) and it’s probably much cheaper.

No! There are charges for central london drivers each day and an all access pass for the tube is a much cheaper and quicker way to get around London!

  6. No no no. London is the most difficult and congested city to drive in. Also there is an £8 a day congestion charge for travelling into zone 1. It is much quicker, efficient and economical to use the tube and go by foot in the central tourist areas.

I would have thought that it would not be a good idea as cars in London are liable for the congestion charge and driving in london is a nightmare which would spoil your holiday

I certainly dont envy you driving in and around London. Not sure if you are coming as a ‘sight seer’ but if so you cant beat the tube/ bus services which offer good daily/weekly tickets which would take away all the stress & strains of driving which I think would spoil things……………..Anyway whichever you choose have a great time

no definitely not, the tube and buses are good, traffic is very bad in london and its hard to find your way round. parking is also a nightmare.

if you are staying in London I would recommend just using the Underground or bus system and of course walking. Parking is terrible, narrow streets, and they drive on the Left remember. I lived outside London and just used the public transport. Have fun!

no way, London is a nightmare to drive in, plus the congestion charge and parking problems, and public transport is good there and things are often closer together than you think if you like walking. Absolutely no way rent a car, you will lose more time in traffic than anything else

Two ways of looking at it.. rent a car and have the hassle of
finding your way around, plus parking fees, tow away charges and if you aviod all these, you are usually parked miles from
where you want to be, Don’t rent a car an you have to worry
about taxi drivers overcharging, provided you can get a taxi….
and as for Public Transport,, you need the ‘knowledge’
All in all,, its a catch 22 situation…good luck !!

No! Use the tube system, very convenient, enviromentally friendly and best of all – cheaper. Daily and weekly passes are available.

It is definately not a good idea to rent a car. London is a very transportation-friendly city. There are many ways to get around town, including the Tube (subway), double decker buses, and cabs (although those could be pricey). Cars will be a headache and actually more money than getting around through public transportation. However, if you want to get around the suburbs/outer London, then go ahead and rent a car.

No…get travel cards or if your going on the tubes/underground and buses a lot, find out a bout an Oyster card, as it gives you a discount on fares !

Nope i was there at the weekend for the rugby the tube is fast quick and cheap. and an experience of learning how to get from place to place its easy.

No dont bother – you will get congestion charges – and you will be stuck in jams all the time.. get some sort of travel pass for the underground..

    Very probably not.

Certainly not if you are going to Central London. You have to pay the Congestion Charge (£8 if I recollect rightly) each day. Buses and tubes are very frequent, faster than cars (buses have reserved lanes) and go just about everywhere. They are expensive if you get individual tickets, so get an Oyster Card (a magnetic swipe card): you can buy one at any underground station.

Britain’s railways are overwhelmingly geared to getting people to London, so you don’t want to travel to London by car either.

If you are too posh to use the tube and buses, and therefore have the money, lots of taxis roam the main streets for you to hail.

The only reason I can think of why you would want a car is if you were on business in the suburbs and needed to make a journey across the edge of the city for which there is no good public transport route. This is unlikely.

The congestion charge keeps the very middle of London clear; but driving a car anywhere else is a nightmare. London is an old city and has lots of narrow streets rather than the dual carriageways you might expect if you are from outside Europe. And if you are foreign remember that the United Kingdom drives on the left, which you may not be used to.

    Enjoy your week in London

    Driving in London? Forget it.
Use public trasport while you’re there. Tube, bus, and taxi. London is not a drivers city.

  23. ekcentrik /

No….I would not try it. I live in London and hate to drive across it.
Bus and tube your best bet…okay you may get some noisy passengers on board…specilally tose morons who play their walkman so loud or shout instead of chatting with their fellow passengers…..

enjoy your stay in London though.

you don’t need a car in London – get yourself a travelcard that will cover you for tubes and buses, allow yourself money for the odd taxi after hours and you’ll be fine (we have a great public transport network).

Other good reasons not to have a car in London: the traffic is a nightmare, petrol is expensive, the congestion charge is expensive, there’s hardly any parking, and good luck trying to navigate around the city by road – when our taxi drivers learn to do this it takes them months.

    Have fun!
