How long can I leave gerbils when on vacation?

katie t asked:

I have a couple of gerbils and am going on vacation. How long is it okay to leave your gerbils with ample amounts of cardboard, food and water?

  1. Get a gerbil sitter if your gone for more than 1-3 days. I left my gerbils alone for 3/4 days. They seemed kinda fine.

  2. I have 14 Gerbils (accident) and before when I only had 2, I would only leave them for about 2-3 Days with a Huge bowl of food, and full water! But, you should Never leave them for too long because their water may not work (mine does that sometimes) all of a Sudden and it is good to just check on them once Daily! Maybe get someone to come in and check on them (maybe 1-2 times a week)

  3. ONLY 2 days and you have to leave enough water and food for that amount of time.

  4. I have raised hamsters for years, and I love to travel. When I am going out of town, I clean cages, fill water bottles, and put in extra fresh food. That will carry them for a week or so. Anything longer and I will have someone come through to clean cages and fill food and water containers. During the week I try to get someone to come through to check water bottles and just be sure things look ok. I have never had a problem with that routine during all the years I have raised hamsters.

  5. About 1 to 3 days as long as there is lot of food and water but any more than 3 days and the no chance they will live if you going away have a friend to look after them or just come in and feed and change water

  6. it depends on how many times you want to breed them while you’re on vacation.

  7. The most gerbils I owned at one time was 123…..There were times when I would leave them alone for over two weeks……As long as the gerbils have plenty of food…..plenty of water…..and fresh bedding when you leave, they should be fine till you get back……I owned 8 large crittertrail cages with over 100 ft of crittertrail tubing connecting all of them around the room and they did fine without me as long as I provided plenty of food, water and fresh bedding……oh and stuff for them to gnaw on to wear down teeth….Might I add that I started with 3 gerbils……I didnt know that one was a female……until I began noticing that there were different colors showing up constantly and they were eating more and more food from month to month……lol…..what an experience!!!!!!…..Anyway…..they dont require seeing you day to day to survive…..even though we would like to think it works that way…..lol……good luck and happy vacationing…….have fun!!!!!

  8. A few days is typically fine, the previous post was an oddball
case. My son has had Gerbils as pets for 3 years now.
6 to be exact, and they will often stay in their tanks for days
    without any problems.

But if their enclosure is really small, and they are used to
coming out every day, they might have some spats.

  9. I don’t suggest leaving them for too long, I personally wouldn’t go for more than 2-3 days without mine.
