What is your suggestion for a great family vacation destination in the Eastern half of the US?

It is an extended family vacation — two in their 50′s, 3 in their 20′s, two in their 30s and a 10 month old. I’d love to find somewhere that offers a little of everything and won’t be too crowded in September. Everyone likes slightly different things, so somewhere that offers outdoorsy stuff, fishing, shopping, and nightlife would be ideal.

Probably New Jersey, cities like Ocean City,Atlantic City,Wildwood would be perfect!
Or maybe Maine =)))
Maine:) Great places. Camden is my favorite! You can also do stops along the way. We did this…great fun!
Tennessee. It’s an absolutely beautiful state and has something for everyone. The Smoky Mountains are incredible and are the most visited national park in the country. There is lots to do in the eastern part of the state as well as visit the Smokies… Gatlinburg has lots of local arts and crafts places and a nice aquarium as well as Dollywood. In the middle of the state is Nashville. The music scene is great and there are 2 huge lakes for fishing, boating, etc. There are wonderful parks for hiking (all over the state) and picnicing. Centennial Park in the center of the city has a full sizs replica of the Parthenon and is a museum. There is also the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Frist Museum, Lower Broadway which is historic and is where the honky tonks are, loads of mansions and plantations to tour,, including Pres. Andrew Jackson’s home The Hermitage, the state Capitol, etc. To the West is Memphis with Graceland and Beale Street and the famous Peabody Hotel. To the south is Chattanooga which is a great city with Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railroad, the aquarium, the river walk, the Chattanooga Railroad, etc. The drives between all these places are beautiful. There are also many other smaller towns to stop in that have fascinating histories such as Franklin, Gallatin, Jackson and so many more.
Have you considered the National Parks?

September is an excellent time to go, some of the leaves will be starting to change and it won’t be blistering hot.
I’d like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it’s hard to understand why people don’t stay home.
Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere – anywhere but home.
