We were in Cuba last April, 6 people on our flight had no hotel booked before they left England, no problem though, when you come through customs just go up to one of the holiday reps and they will recommend a hotel to you and give you advice even though you haven’t booked your flight with them they are really helpful, customs is no problem and nothing like people make out, you just go through one at once, your passport and visa are checked they smile at you and your on your way, the weather will be excellent in February, beautiful and sunny with good temperatures, we had absolutely no problem with the food, it was lovely, but if your into McDonald’s and fish and chips your not going to get them their, its just good healthy tasty food and lots of it, you are safer in Cuba than you are in England, I walked back to our hotel several times on my own both during the day and night and was very safe and felt safe, the Cubans are wonderful amazing people who will go out of their way to do what they can to help you and to make your holiday more worthwhile and memorable, cigars, buy them from reputable dealers and not from street vendors, we bought 10 Cohibas for £20 which was really good value, there is always someone to help you in Cuba so don’t worry you will have an amazing time, the beaches and ocean are out of this world too, have a great time and enjoy yourself, good luck.

2. Yes you do need a hotel reservation and it has to be real. My friend and I went to Cuba a month ago and we said we were going to stay at a certain hotel (which was not true but we thought we could get away with it) and they made us stay at an expensive hotel for the first few days. After that we stayed at a “casa particular” (Cubans rent their rooms even though it’s illegal).

   What I suggest is that you get a cheap hotel reservation (they’re going to ask for proof of it so make sure you print it) and after the first couple of days you can do what you want.

   Another advice: it’s easier to go thru customs if you already have your tourist card ready (believe me you’ll want the immigration process to pass asap because it’s very disorganized in my opinion)

   After you leave the airport get ready to enjoy, Cuba is a fascinating country, it’s just the first tow hours at the airport that are horrible.

3. Getting through customs should be trouble free. Immigration are not going to be curious about your hotel reservation. It is nicer to stay with an individual family and here is a site for booking in Havana, if youhave not done so before. http://www.webhavana.com/main.php
   Havana is very safe, being highly policed. You will find the Cubans charming, but beware of anyone who tries to sell you drugs, as they are likely to be agents provocateurs, trying to secure an on the spot fine on behalf of the police. Be cautious too of people begging for money to pay for medicine. Offer to accompany them to the pharmacy if they seem genuine and if they are reluctant to take you up on it, it will serve to confirm your suspicions. The weather in February is marvellous — not too hot and hurricane free. The food is not what you could term gastronomy, but you can get good meals in a paladar (private restaurant, ask locally and book in advance).
