Which is better; going on vacation to a resort, or traveling to the same destination but away from tourists?

I recently went to Jamaica, and lived in a research center away from all the tourist hot spots. I felt like i had a better time doing that because you got to experience life, where as when we went to a tourist location it was very busy and everyone was trying to harass you for money. Im curious if anyone has a preference.

Depends where you are going and where you are staying there… some places aren’t safe to be off the big resort complexes. When I went to the Dominican Republic, I had no problems with people harassing me for money at the resort. So I guess it all depends on where you stay, and where you go, etc…

It depends completely on what you like to do. for myself i dislike tours/resorts completely.
i love to find the small out of the way hotel, walk around at my leisure and if i really want a tour i arrange my own. is much more relaxed and you get the chance to meet and talk to people – tours are like canned music compared to a concert to me. nice enough but not the real thing.
we have explored athens, copenhagen, london, bankok and seoul this way.
you do have to be willing to be flexible, lost and confused fairly often LOL!! but thats part of the adventure. we have had a FEW bad experiances but compared to horror stories i hear from tour groups– well, maybe my expectations are a little more realistic or we are just a little more relaxed-
take your pick based on your own preferences.

If you stay in a tourist resort you are basically escaping reality. People there are trained to be polite and hospitable to guests. It is important that you experience the authentic culture whether it be good or bad. In this way you really get to know the country well and learn something from its people.

  4. Interesting and informative. But will you write about this one more?

  5. I am very glad I found your blog on yahoo. Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my friend were just preparing to do some research about this. I am happy to see such great information being shared freely out there.
